Visionaries Gala Recognizes Four Cabrini Honorees

The fifth annual Cabrini University Visionaries Gala honored awardees Joseph J. Romano, PhD, and Sharon C Schwarze, PhD, Professors Emeriti of Philosophy; Abel Rodríguez, JD (’01) Founding Director of the Cabrini Center on Immigration; and Joan Buzzallino (’66), Trustee Emerita, Vice President, IBM (ret.) and raised more than $192,000.

“My Cabrinian education provided the foundation for my career and my life,” said Board of Trustees Chair Frank Emmerich Jr. (’92) as he welcomed guests to Cabrini’s Annual Visionaries Gala, held this year November 1 at Pomme in Radnor. “The Cabrini experience empowers students to find their passions and to channel that positive energy into creating change, doing good, and Living with Purpose.”

“I believe that everyone who has ever experienced the Cabrini spirit knows what a special place it is,” said University President Donald B. Taylor, PhD. “We’re here tonight to ensure that our beloved institution continues to grow, to safeguard the Cabrini experience for students of all backgrounds, and to secure the Cabrini mission to provide an Education of the Heart for future generations.”
The four individuals recognized with awards at the gala, along with the student speaker, are living examples of that positive energy and the Cabrini spirit.

Tarana Burke Receives Presitigious Award from Cabrini University

Thursday, September 19, Tarana Burke, founder of the Me Too movement and social justice activist, received the Ivy Young Willis and Martha Willis Dale Award during a ceremony at Cabrini University. Awarded annually, the Ivy Young Willis and Martha Willis Dale Award recognizes women who have made outstanding contributions in the field of public affairs.

In October 2017, #MeToo became a viral phenomenon that quickly spread around the world. Burke emerged as a global leader in the evolving conversation around sexual violence and the need for survivor-centered solutions. Her theory of using empathy to empower survivors is changing the way the world thinks about and engages with survivors. Her belief that healing isn’t a destination, but a journey has touched and inspired millions of survivors who previously lived with the pain, shame, and trauma of their assaults in isolation.

Following her presentation which was conversational in format, Ms. Burke offered kind, compassionate and supportive words to students who asked questions or offered comments. ~excerpts from Cabrini U. website

Cabrini University Celebrates Border Mass

What is a Border Mass? On February 17, 2016, Pope Francis celebrated Mass at the U.S. Mexico Border in Ciudad Juárez and the U.S. churches were asked to concelebrate a Mass at the same time to be in solidarity with the Pope and his intentions.

In discussing Pope Francis’ Mass with the staff of the Wolfington Center at Cabrini University, the idea of celebrating Mass at the Peace Pole on the campus commons was developed. Creating a fence and having people move/migrate through the fence after the Liturgy of the Word to gather around the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist was thought of as a symbolic way to be in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who are in search of a safer, more stable life. The feedback from the first Border Mass was very positive, therefore, yesterday, another border Mass was celebrated for the campus community.

Cabrini University Named Among Most Transformative Colleges in Nation by Money Magazine.

Cabrini University has been named one of the most transformative colleges in the nation by Money Magazine. Cabrini was one of only four Pennsylvania colleges named in the top-50 ranking, which evaluated graduation rates, graduate earnings, and student loan repayment.

The magazine based their rankings on an institution’s “value add,” an indicator to showcase schools whose alumni report high levels of success.

Cabrini’s mission, an Education of the Heart, empowers students to be change-makers in their communities, fields of study, and the world. This transformative pedagogy is dedicated to educating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—and is realized through hands-on learning experiences, student activities and athletics, and service opportunities.

Cabrini Welcomes the Class of 2023 to Campus

The campus was sparkling despite the occasional rain shower on Friday, Aug. 23, when new students moved into their Cabrini home away from home. Nearly 200 enthusiastic current students helped families unload, carry, and haul overflowing carloads of belongings into Woodcrest, East, and Xavier residence halls.New Student and Cavalier

The 390 students in Cabrini’s Class of 2023 hail from 10 states as well as Ethiopia and Mexico. A full 77 percent of them reside on campus; 58 percent of the class is female and 42 percent is male.Students carry boxes

Although they may not have known it, some new students even received a helping hand from University President Donald B. Taylor, PhD, who cruised around in a golf cart semi-incognito with his wife Lechia and member of Cabrini’s founding order Christine Marie Baltas, Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (’66). Many staff and faculty members were also on hand to provide assistance.Students hug outside car

After getting settled in the residence halls, families came together for a Welcome Mass in the Bruckmann Memorial Chapel of Saint Joseph, celebrated by Carl F. Janicki, Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry.

The day’s events continued with the traditional Matriculation ceremony, where Cabrini officially enrolled its new class, led by an academic procession in the Nerney Field House. Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Chioma Ugochukwu, PhD, served as presider, and Professional Advisor and Retention Specialist Angelica Martinez offered the invocation, suggesting that students “embrace the uncomfortable.”

Taylor then welcomed the newest Cavaliers. “As members of the Cabrini family, you now have a network of alumni, classmates, faculty, and staff who are ready to help you succeed, are cheering for you, and will become your biggest fans,” he said, encouraging them to think about how they’ll share their passions with the world.Matriculation Procession

Addressing the parents, guardians, family members, and mentors, Taylor said, “We are committed to providing your students with an Education of the Heart and to unlocking your students’ potentials by providing the best college experience for them.”

Continuing a theme of making the most of time at Cabrini were Alumni Association President Nick Luchko (’01) and Assistant Professor of Education Zakia Gates, PhD. “Even though it’s been 22 years since I moved into Xavier Hall,” Luchko said, “I’m still getting advice from my mentors at Cabrini.” Gates wrapped up her remarks with a quote from author Regina Brett: “No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, and show up.”

Student Government President Association President Jessica Arocho (’21) led students in an acceptance of Cabrini’s Core Values—respect, vision, community, and dedication to excellence—followed by Ugochukwu’s official commendation of the new students to the faculty, their formal entrance into the University community.

“We wish you every blessing and challenge you to reach beyond your expectations to new heights of learning,” she said, “and to being in solidarity with others and preparing for a life in your chosen fields.”

The program concluded with a rousing rendition of the Cavalier Fight Song that brought the Orientation leaders to their feet in spirit and camaraderie. Families shared heartfelt—and sometimes tearful—good-byes as members of Cabrini’s Class of 2023 moved on to continue with three days of Orientation activities. Classes for all students began Monday, Aug. 26.

Cabrini University Master Plan Moves Forward

Moving forward with campus improvements!

Every time you turn around at Cabrini University, you see something new.

This summer, Cabrini completed a pair of major improvements—a student residence named South Hall and a parking garage—that signal the completion of the Campus Master Plan’s second phase.

Nearby, two paved turnarounds and accompanying parking spaces increase the accessibility and use of both structures.

Another notable upgrade that began over the summer and is scheduled for completion in early September—CRU5H, pronounced Crush—will transform the dining experience in Widener Center. Additionally, the variety of vending options has been increased.

Each endeavor furthers Cabrini’s goal to enhance student-centered living on campus, especially the opening of South Hall, a 180-bed residence for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Located between West Hall and Casey House on Residential Boulevard, the newest building on campus replaces the former Lanshe House.

“The addition of South Residence Hall provides highly sought-after group living space as an option for returning students who want to live with multiple friends on campus,” said Stephen M. Rupprecht, EdD, Dean of Students. “The lounges and open spaces, both inside and outside, provide many community gathering options for our students.”

With three floors and two wings, the L-shaped building features window-lit common areas for studying and lounging with expansive views of the Mansion, the centerpiece of campus. Four students share each unit, which has two double rooms and a bathroom. All residents may use the common laundry facilities and the kitchen.

Students can enter South Hall from Residential Drive or a new walking path that extends from the Eagle Road entrance to campus between the tennis courts and Mansion, and where a new automobile turnaround offers quick access to the buildings on that side of campus.

Visitors who arrive at Cabrini through King of Prussia Road will come upon another addition to the landscape as they emerge through the Cathedral of Trees. Surrounded by lush plantings, a new parking garage will help to accommodate Cabrini’s growing student body and community. To be used primarily by faculty and staff, the garage will free parking spaces for students in the Dixon and Founder’s lots.

The three-story structure provides 130 spaces throughout two covered floors and a third roof level as well as an elevator designed for ADA specifications. The green space across from the garage and Xavier Hall features a curved path for accessible pedestrian travel.

A second new turnaround space between the garage and Woodcrest Hall provides a safe and convenient location for student shuttles and access to residence halls.

“Completion of the parking garage and turnarounds will reduce traffic in the center of campus and move us toward our strategic goal of converting Cabrini to a pedestrian-friendly environment,” said Brian Eury, Chief of Staff.

Cabrini University Announces Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

Cabrini University announces the establishment of a new Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program after being granted approval by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing (PASBON).

The program is slated to begin in fall 2020. Applications will open Aug. 1, 2019.

“Our new Nursing program complements Cabrini’s robust academic offerings in the sciences,” said University President Donald B. Taylor, PhD. “As the need for nurses continues to increase, Cabrini nurses will thrive as essential members of complex and diverse healthcare systems.”

The timing of Cabrini’s Nursing program coincides with an expected escalation in the demand for nurses: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects remarkable growth for the nursing profession over the next decade—15 percent from 2016 to 2026.

Cabrini Nursing majors will be admitted directly into the program and take discipline-specific courses starting in their first year. Students will gain immediate insight into the theories and concepts essential to nursing practice, professionalism, and their roles as members of interprofessional healthcare teams. Cabrini’s coursework will prepare graduates to pass the NCLEX-RN examination, which is required of all registered nurses.

In addition to their community and acute care off-campus clinical experiences, students in Cabrini’s BSN program will benefit from a state-of-the-art Clinical Simulation Center (CSC). This innovative learning environment will allow students to enhance the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they garner in their classroom and off-campus clinical experiences. The CSC will optimize students’ ability to refine their skills in order to foster confident, collaborative leaders in nursing practice. These on-campus clinical simulations, as well as off-campus clinical experiences in diverse community and healthcare settings, will provide students experiential learning opportunities in order to develop sound clinical judgment skills.

“The Cabrini Nursing program is positioned to collaborate with innovative healthcare systems and impactful community partners,” said Jennifer Specht, PhD, RN, Founding Director of Cabrini’s Nursing program. “Our graduates will be prepared to competently practice and thrive in complex healthcare environments. They will develop leadership skills which will allow them to inform and influence education, policy, and practice in nursing and healthcare.”

Cabrini University’s Global Justice on Tap

Cabrini University’s Alumni Office partnered with the University’s Wolfington Center to host a Catholic Relief Services (CRS) alumni event called Global Justice On Tap: A discussion on women building peace in Rwanda. The event was held in The Cottage where guests enjoyed one another’s company over dinner, followed by a moving discussion with Pascasie Musabyemungu, Project Manager, CRS Rwanda, who led an informal discussion around her work with Women Building Peace Project Across Borders. This event is part of a series that welcomes back alumni who were and are interested in global justice issues as a way to keep alumni engaged in the mission of Cabrini for many years after they graduate.
